Student Spotlight: Jane Ashley Rowell
Jane Ashley's Story
Jane Ashley Rowell, a native of Douglas, Georgia, is a double major in Avian Biology and Biological Science with a minor in Poultry Science at the University of Georgia. As a third-year undergraduate student, she is pursuing her long-term goal of becoming a poultry veterinarian. Her first exposure to the UGA Department of Poultry Science occurred during the CAES Rural Scholars Program’s interview process, where she was inspired by Dr. Jessica Fife’s presentation highlighting the diverse professional pathways within the poultry sector. The breadth of opportunities – including pre-veterinary, pre-medical, and pre-law tracks – captured her interest. Growing up in a community with a strong poultry presence, Jane Ashley immediately felt connected to the department and quickly became immersed in its academic and experiential learning opportunities.
Jane Ashley’s passion for avian health has been strengthened through challenging and impactful coursework. She cites POUL 4060: Reproductive Endocrinology, taught by Dr. Adam Davis, as her favorite course despite its rigorous nature. Additionally, she describes POUL 3000: Avian Surgical Techniques, taught by Dr. Laura Ellestad, as a “dream come true.” These academic experiences have not only tested her abilities and broadened her skills but also reinforced her commitment to a career in poultry veterinary medicine.
Outside the classroom, Jane Ashley is a highly engaged student leader. She serves as a UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Ambassador, a Department of Poultry Science Avian Ambassador, is a CAES Rural Scholar, and is a recipient of the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine’s Food Animal Veterinary Incentive Program (FAVIP). She also currently serves as Treasurer of the Poultry Science Club and enjoys playing intramural basketball. In addition, Jane Ashley is actively involved in undergraduate research with Dr. Prafulla Regmi, focusing on poultry welfare, behavior, and neurology. This hands-on research experience has enhanced her understanding of avian health and welfare, directly supporting her professional goals.
Jane Ashley’s industry and upcoming global experiences further distinguish her academic journey. This past summer, she completed an internship with Pilgrim’s, where she focused on fertility and hatchability. Looking ahead, she will expand her global perspective through participation in the Scotland: Animal Health Research and Development study abroad program in May. Jane Ashley’s drive, compassion, and dedication to advancing the poultry sector exemplify her status as an outstanding student and future poultry veterinarian.
