Scholarships

The Department of Poultry Science has a number of scholarships for undergraduates majoring in poultry science or avian biology.  These scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and participation in departmental activities which includes but is not limited to participation in the Poultry Science Club and its activities.  To apply for our departmental scholarships as a current or upcoming Poultry Science or Avian Biology major, please fill out the online form by 5pm Friday, February 1, 2025. UGA Dept. of Poultry Science Scholarship Application

Mr. & Mrs. J. B. Gay Memorial Fund

  • Qualifications: Graduate student in Poultry Science, preferably a Georgia resident
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and participation in Poultry Department activities.
  • Established: 1979
  • Purpose: Established as a memorial fund to honor Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Gay. Mr. Gay was an active member of the Georgia egg industry and United Egg Producers initiated the scholarship fund in view of Mr. Gay's contributions to the Georgia Egg Industry. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance for students in Poultry Science based on criteria listed above. Preference is given to Georgia residents.

Roy and Maye Durr Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science Major 
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and interest and participation in Poultry Department activities.
  • Established: 1977
  • Purpose: Established by the Georgia Egg Association and the Georgia Poultry Federation in honor of Ray Durr and his wife Maye Durr in recognition of his leadership in the development of the poultry and egg industry in Georgia and nationally.

Shutze Scholarship Fund

  • Qualifications: Junior Poultry Science Major 
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Academic merit, leadership potential, and interest in poultry industry.
  • Purpose: Established by Dr. Stan Savage, member of Poultry Extension Faculty, to encourage students to major in Poultry Science and prepare for a career in the poultry industry.

Hubbard Farms Charitable Foundation

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science Major 
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Outstanding senior student enrolled in Poultry Science.
  • Purpose: Established in 1974 by Hubbard Farms to recognize outstanding achievement of a Poultry Science major at The University of Georgia.

Harrison Poultry Science Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science Major 
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership potential, and involvement in Department activities and interest in the poultry industry.
  • Established: 1991
  • Purpose: Established with a $25,000 donation from Mr. Harold Harrison of Harrison Poultry Inc. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage enrollment in Poultry Science and to provide financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students majoring in Poultry Science.

Till M. Huston Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science Major 
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Purpose: Established in 1980 to honor Dr. Till M. Huston's retirement from The University of Georgia Department of Poultry Science after more than 30 years of service to the University. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize a junior or senior poultry student that has a genuine interest in the poultry industry and who has maintained a good GPA.

Centurion Poultry Student Development Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Purpose: Centurion Poultry, Inc. is a major supplier of egg layer parent stock. They have recently broadened their product line to include a genetic line of meat chickens. Headquartered in Lexington, GA, Centurion has experienced rapid company growth and is considered a model of how to build a successful organization. Owners Gijs and Louise Schimmel have been committed supporters of the poultry science scholarship program.

Hatfield Student Enhancement Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Established: 2007
  • Purpose: Joe Hatfield was a founder of Fieldale Farms headquartered in Baldwin, GA. Mr. Hatfield and his partners grew Fieldale Farms from a small feed supply business into one of the top ten broiler companies in the U.S.

Thomas A. Arrendale, Jr. Student Enhancement Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Student
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Established: 2007
  • Purpose: Tom Arrendale was a founder of Fieldale Farms headquartered in Baldwin, GA. Mr. Arrendale and his partners grew Fieldale Farms from a small feed supply business into one of the top ten broiler companies in the U.S.

William Lee Arrendale Student Enhancement Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Student
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Established: 2007

Cummickel Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Student
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Purpose: This scholarship was put in place to support students pursuing a degree in poultry science or avian biology.

Abit & Henry Massey Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Student
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Purpose: J. Henry Massey was a two-time war Marine veteran, and served 26 years with UGA Cooperative Extension, including serving as the Poultry Extension faculty head, and Northwest GA Extension director. Abit Massey is the President Emeritus of the Georgia Poultry Federation where he had served full time for 49 years. Both brothers contributed greatly to the success of the poultry and agri-business sectors throughout Georgia, and amongst their most notable accolades include being inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame. This scholarship is given to Poultry Science or Avian Biology students in their honor.

Caswell Challenge Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Student, Dean's List (3.7+ GPA)
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Purpose: Mr. Stanley Caswell was born in Camilla, GA in 1922 and raised in Americus. He graduated with a degree in Poultry Science from UGA in 1943. He served in the US Army Air Force. The Caswell Challenge was established in 1981 to provide financial assistance to students in Poultry Science who maintain at least a 3.7 GPA.

Winston May Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology Student
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, financial need, career in poultry industry and interest and participation in poultry-related activities.
  • Established: 2004
  • Purpose: The Winston May Student Enhancement Endowment was established in memory of Winston May in honor of his character, integrity, and professional contributions to the poultry industry.

Dr. Scott Russell Memorial Scholarship

  • Established: 2017
  • Purpose: The Scott Russell memorial scholarship was endowed by friends, family and colleagues. Dr. Scott Russell received all 3 of his degrees from UGA (B.S.A. in Microbiology and M.S./PhD in Poultry Science), after which he joined the Poultry Science Departmental faculty as an Extension Poultry Processing Specialist from 1994 to his untimely passing in 2015. Dr. Russell was nationally and internationally renown for his contributions to poultry processing and food-borne pathogen reduction strategies.

W.A. Crider, Sr. Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and interest and participation in department activities.
  • Purpose: W.A. Crider began his career in the poultry business processing birds in his backyard in Douglas, GA. From this humble start he founded Crider, Inc. in Stillmore, GA and grew this company into a major supplier of further processed poultry products. This scholarship was given in his memory by Crider, Inc. in recognition of him being named a Georgia Poultry Pioneer.

Billy Crider Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and interest and participation in department activities.
  • Purpose: Billy Crider is currently the owner and CEO of Crider, Inc. in Stillmore, GA. He has led Crider, Inc. to its current stature as a leader in further processing of poultry products. This scholarship was given in his honor by anonymous donors in recognition of him being named a Georgia Poultry Pioneer.

Dr. Roger Wyatt Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and interest and participation in department activities.
  • Purpose: Dr. Wyatt served on UGA Poultry Science faculty from 1974-2003. He was world-renown for his excellence in toxicology (especially mycotoxicology) research.

Dr. Mike Lacy Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and interest and participation in department activities.
  • Purpose: Dr. Lacy served on UGA Poultry Science faculty from 1985 until his retirement in 2016. He served initially as an Extension Poultry Specialist, working in the filed with broiler producers, flock supervisors, and live production managers. His applied research, outreach and teaching focused on the effect of the poultry house environment on broiler performance. From 2001 until his retirement he served as head of the department, broadening the successful impact of the department to countless students, as well as impactful research and outreach programs to Georgia, the nation, and the world.

Dr. Dan Fletcher Scholarship

  • Qualifications: Poultry Science or Avian Biology major
  • Awarded: Annually
  • Selection Criteria: Scholarship, leadership, and interest and participation in department activities.
  • Purpose: This scholarship was created in honor of Dr. Dan Fletcher, who joined the UGA Department of Poultry Science as faculty in 1977 and was one of the world's most foremost experts in poultry processing and meat quality. He contributed to our fundamental understanding of factors affecting meat and egg color and texture. While in the department, he gave and extraordinary amount of time to insure undergraduate and graduate students had a meaningful educational experience.
