From the Desk of Dr. Todd Applegate

Dear Poultry Science friends:

As we start a new academic year, I’m pleased to share highlights that reflect the strength, dedication, and momentum of our Poultry Science community here at the University of Georgia.

Our faculty continue to be recognized nationally for their impactful research. Dr. Lilong Chai, Dr. Oluyinka Olukosi, and Dr. Rami Dalloul each received awards at the Poultry Science Association’s (PSA) annual meeting from the American Egg Board, the American Feed Industry Association, and the National Chicken Council, respectively. These honors underscore the breadth and depth of our department’s contributions—from environmental engineering and nutrition to poultry health and immunology.

Our graduate students also made us proud at PSA’s annual meeting and other professional meetings, having an overwhelming 80 presentations and posters. These achievements reflect the high caliber of mentorship and scholarship within our programs. Congratulations to our students who were recognized for their presentation excellence!

Leadership and service were on full display as well. Dr. Jose Otavio Sorbara, a visiting scholar, was elected to the PSA Board of Directors, while Dr. Brian Fairchild concluded his term as past president of the association. Graduate student Muhammad Ali wrapped up his role as Hatchery Student Director and student representative to the PSA Board. A special thanks goes to Dr. Laura Ellestad, who chaired this year’s PSA annual meeting, which welcomed approximately 1,200 attendees and was a resounding success thanks to her leadership and the efforts of her committee.

This spring, the students re-launched our Graduate Student Association, creating new opportunities for connection and collaboration. We also hosted a series of career and professional development discussions featuring Dr. Luis Gomez (Phibro), Dr. Claire Stephens (Elanco), and Dr. Juanfra Devillena (Wayne-Sanderson), who generously shared their insights and experiences with our students. Similarly, a shout-out to our two keynote speakers at our fall graduate student symposium – Drs. Marc de Beer (Aviagen) and Tom Porter (Univ. MD). These efforts are helping to foster a strong sense of community and professional growth within the department.

On the outreach and recruitment front, we initiated an external advisory group to help guide our strategic direction. We also expanded our engagement with prospective students through a second departmental open house, specifically targeting pre-professional majors such as pre-vet and pre-med. Additionally, we launched a second level of our Avian Academy, working with teachers to integrate poultry science into middle and high school curricula - exciting steps toward inspiring future generations.

We are wrapping up the final punch list items in our new building. One of our key goals moving forward is to complete our capital campaign, with approximately $4 million remaining to fully realize our vision for the department’s future. It has truly been an amazing space for uplifting the environment for students and broadening discussions with stakeholders.

As always, I want to thank each of you—students, alumni, faculty, staff, and industry partners—for your continued support and engagement. Your commitment helps us prepare the next generation of poultry scientists and ensures that our department remains a leader in innovation, education, and service.

Warm regards,

Dr. Todd J. Applegate
