Conservation Production Systems Training Conference slated for south Georgia Jan. 31-Feb. 2

For decades, farmers who have embraced conservation production have seen increased soil health, reduced irrigation demands and lowered economic risk. For the past 17 years, Georgia farmers interested in adopting new conservation practices for their farms – including those looking to swap best practices with other conservation tillers – have gathered at Georgia’s annual Conservation Production Systems Training Conference.

Registration is now open for the 2017 conference, which is being held at South Georgia State College in Douglas, Georgia, from Tuesday, Jan. 31, to Wednesday, Feb.1.

The conference brings farmers, researchers and University of Georgia Cooperative Extension experts together to discuss the implementation of conservation production practices. This year’s speakers will discuss issues like cover crop establishment, cultivation in cover crop residue, fertility management, cover crop mixes, use of cover crops in grazing systems and the economics of conservation production.

In addition to seminars, a field day will be held at a nearby farm to demonstrate new equipment and attachments for conservation tillage as well as adjustments to equipment to enable planting in heavy residue.

Many farmers hold a long-standing commitment to improving the land for the next generation. Production practices such as reducing tillage and using cover crops within a crop rotation can help farmers improve economic returns and properly steward row cropland.

The 2024 honorees are William D. Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate.

Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.
The Research Awards Program is sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF). Awards are given annually to honor outstanding faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and to recognize excellence in UGA research, scholarly creativity, technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. Two recently published studies by University of Georgia researchers show that the consumers surveyed believe buying local is a more sustainable option, but they also value the convenience of online shopping and prefer that retailers provide basic information about the environmental impact of local products in the digital marketplace. Driven by increasing consumer interest in buying local and concerns about the impact of agricultural production systems on a changing climate, the studies were based on data from a web-based survey about consumer interest in sustainability, information about food production and online marketing preferences.

Five professors named Senior Members of National Academy of Inventors 03/06/24 Brandon Ward
The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has selected five University of Georgia researchers as 2024 NAI Senior Members, the largest single induction for the university in its history. UGA now has 16 Senior Members overall. NAI Senior Members recognize faculty, scientists, and administrators for their ability to innovate and commercialize new technologies.
