UGA Tifton campus celebrates fall graduates

Faculty and staff at the University of Georgia Tifton campus celebrated their fall graduates during a special ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 7. Eleven of the 17 students listed below participated in the celebration.

Students who received their bachelor’s degrees from the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences this fall, their hometowns and majors are:

  • Brandon Dowling, Morven, Georgia; agribusiness
  • Nicole Taylor, Tifton, Georgia; agricultural education

Students who received their master’s degrees from UGA CAES this fall, their hometowns and majors are:

  • Shanshan Cao, Shiyan, China; horticulture
  • Lissi Carr, Ray City, Georgia; agricultural and environmental education
  • Clarence Codod, Bauko, Phillipines; plant pathology
  • Will Hemphill, Gainesville, Georgia; plant pathology
  • Sarah Hobby, Tifton, Georgia; plant protection and pest management
  • Dario Di Genova, Firenze, Italy; crop and soil sciences
  • Justin Lanier, Cordele, Georgia; plant protection and pest management
  • Jason Mallard, Portal, Georgia; plant protection and pest management
  • Lauren Perez, Elgin, South Carolina; entomology
  • Pete Perrin, Chula, Georgia; agricultural and applied economics

  • Arianna Toffanin, Cartigliano, Italy; crop and soil sciences

Davis Gimode of Nairobi, Kenya, received a doctoral degree in plant breeding, genetics and genomics.

The celebration preceded the official commencement ceremony, which takes place on the Athens, Georgia, campus on Friday, Dec. 13.

George Vellidis, professor in the CAES Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and director of UGA-Tifton academic programs, said faculty members were excited for the large number of graduate students who participated in the ceremony this year.

“I am sure all of our faculty are proud,” said Vellidis. “We have mentored them or had them as our students for two to four years and we look forward to seeing where they go next in their careers.”

This year’s ceremony consisted of a special commencement address from Joe West, assistant dean at UGA-Tifton.

“Graduation is a special time of the year for our campus. These graduates are our future agricultural leaders and it’s great to be able to celebrate this accomplishment with them,” said West, who has announced his plans to retire in February 2020.

The graduates also had the opportunity to participate in the new tradition of blowing the centennial whistle, which began last year during UGA-Tifton’s centennial celebration.

The ceremony took place in the seminar room in the National Environmentally Sound Production Agriculture Laboratory (NESPAL) building at UGA-Tifton.

UGA Extension protects family farms and sensitive species 04/04/24 Emily Cabrera
Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.

CAES and USDA break ground on new agriculture research facility at UGA-Tifton 03/04/24 Jordan Powers
The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service have broken ground on a new state-of-the-art research facility housing the Southeast Watershed Research Laboratory and the Crop Genetics and Breeding Research Unit. the UGA Tifton campus, the research facility will include a new, 31,000-square-foot building housing university and ARS employees working on climate-smart agricultural research.

Ron Walcott, University of Georgia vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School, was first a doctoral student at the UGA Tifton campus. As a UGA administrator and professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, Walcott helps students and colleagues find their sense of place at the university and has a legacy of increasing diversity in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Farm Again program helps veterans reconnect with the land 02/13/24 Carlisa Johnson
For many veterans, returning to civilian life is a stark shift from their fast-paced and service-based military life. When you combine this with the more than 4.7 million veterans who have service-based disabilities, the challenges of re-entry compound. The University of Georgia is working to assist Georgia’s veterans with this transition through its dynamic farming program, Farm Again.

UGA Extension announces 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year 01/26/24 Maria M. Lameiras
Building on the foundation set by his father in Effingham County, Shiloh Farms owner Bruce Redmond has expanded his operation through innovation and dedication, earning him the honor of 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year, presented at the 2024 Georgia Ag Forecast in Tifton, Georgia, on Jan. 26. Nominated by Blake Carter, the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources agent for Effingham County, Redmond assumed full ownership and operation of Shiloh Farms in 2018.
